BAKER LAWLEY has come a long way since his first job digging post holes for septic systems in the poorest nether-regions of Alabama. His writing career began at age five with a defacing of Stuart Little–a library copy, no less–by giving an addendum to the final chapter. His mother made him spend his allowance to purchase the book from that library.

As he moved up in his jobs (lifeguard, school uniform sales, editor at The Black Warrior Review, Associate Professor of English at Gustavus Adolphus College) and his publishing outlets (Copper Nickel, Eleven Eleven, The Cream City Review, The Southeast Review, Atticus Review, and others), he never forgot the magic of hearing those backwoods master storytellers, of digging into the creative process and trying to catch that magic.

LAURA ISDAHL began her serious writing career in the fifth grade when she wrote a forty page hand-written story called, “The Time Machine,” which followed a strangely similar plot to that of Back to the Future, her favorite movie. She is an English major at Gustavus Adolphus College with a thirst for a story and a cup of green tea. Her work has been published in Firethorne Literary Journal. Her taste in literature has evolved somewhat since the days she thought Twilight was the epitome of classic novels. Now, she spends her time reading books that she was once assigned in high school lit classes.

Because she can’t seem to get enough of writing in class, she spends her evenings working in the college’s Writing Center, helping others improve their papers. She writes for the satirical publication, Fourth Crown, and is managing editor of Firethorne Literary Journal.
